Happy Gaṇeśa, Chaturthī or Vinayaka Chaturthī is a key Hindu Festival, signalling the coming down on Earth of Lord Gaṇeśa, the god of wisdom, prosperity, remover all things that are stuck! and giver of good fortune. He is always worshipped first among all the pantheon of deities and all pujas and homam begin with prayers to him. According to Hindu Lunar Calendar, his coming on our planet falls on 4th phase of the Moon in the bright half after the New Moon in Leo, in the (Chaturthī tithi of Shukla paksha) Lunar month of Bhadrapada.Sidereal New moon was in Leo in the Constellation of Nakshatra PurvaPhalguni.
On this day, Gaṇeśa, Chaturthī Vrat fast is recommended, as per Bhavishya Purana by Sri Krshna. Gaṇeśa, is remover of all ills and obstructions that plague us every step of the way and by installing a Gaṇeśa, Idol, and doing a Gaṇeśa, Chaturthī Puja ritual, helps overcome some of the ills. Sweet rice dumplings called Modak is the most favourite food of Lord Gaṇeśa,.

Puffed Rice with jagghery is also one he loves.
Bananas are also offered to Lord Gaṇeśa, and is one of his favourites. Puran poli which is a paratha stuffed with sweet lentil paste, modak, and Coconut Laddoo are all some of the favourite bhog offered to Lord Gaṇeśa, on Gaṇeśa, Chaturthī.
Amongst Flowers, Red Hibiscus is a favourite flower of Lord Gaṇeśa,. For all-round prosperity and destruction of enemies, one should offer hibiscus.

The Gaṇeśa, installation of idol is kept on a small mount of rice and offerings are given. After which this is observed in a special way for a day and a half, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days depending on the family tradition and culture. On the 11th day – Gaṇeśa, is placed in the sea or river or if none is available near you then a pond or a lake or a tub of water.
gaṇēśacaturthī (गणेशचतुर्थी) The fourth of the Bright half of Lunar month of bhādrapada, celebrated as the birthday of Gaṇesh. “The Caturthī (4th day) of the bright lunar fortnight in the month of Sidereal Sun is in Leo, Siṃha is the birthday of Gaṇapati.
It is one of the most celebrated and famous festivals in India. They make the images of Gaṇapati, every year, and make offerings to them on this particular day. It is believed that he who sees the moon on Vināyaka Caturthī will be subjected to dishonour and derision. This belief is based on the following story.
Gaṇapati is very fond of sweetmeat, especially Kozhuk-kaṭṭa (globular solid sweetmeat, called Modaka). It is the custom in North India to worship Gaṇapati by offering these sweetmeats, even today, with all kinds of festivities. On one birthday Gaṇapati went from house to house, had a bellyful of modakas and returned home on his conveyance, the rat. On the way the rat saw a snake and began to tremble with fear. Due to the shivering of its legs Gaṇapati fell down. The belly of Gaṇapati was broken due to the fall and a large quantity of modakas sweet laddoos – Sweet desert balls came out. Ganapati gathered everything that fell out of his belly and stuffed them again in the stomach and joining the cut edges entwined the snake tightly round the stomach. Candra who was standing in the sky seeing all these things laughed with contempt. At this, Gaṇapati got wild and plucked his tusk and throwing it at the moon cursed him: “Let nobody look at you on the Gaṇapati-festival day.” (Brahmavaivarta Purāṇa).
This story is slightly different according to Ganeśa Purāṇa. That story is, that Śrī Parameśvara gave a plum to his elder son Subrahmaṇya without the knowledge of his younger son Gaṇapati, on the 4th day of a bright lunar fortnight and the moon who smiled at it, was cursed.” (Puranic Encyclopedia, under the heading Vināyaka-caturthī).

It continues to state that Ganesha –
त्वं ब्रह्मा त्वं विष्णुस्त्वं
रुद्रस्त्वमिन्द्रस्त्वमग्निस्त्वं
वायुस्त्वं सूर्यस्त्वं चन्द्रमास्त्वं
ब्रह्म भूर्भुवस्सुवरोम् ॥६॥
You are Brahmā, Vişņu, and Rudra [Śiva]. You are Agni, Vāyu, and Sūrya. You are Chandrama. You are earth, space, and heaven. You are the manifestation of the mantra “Oṃ“.
त्वं मूलाधारस्थितोऽसि नित्यम् ।
त्वं शक्तित्रयात्मकः ।
त्वां योगिनो ध्यायन्ति नित्यम् ।
6.11: You always abide in the Muladhara chakra (Therefore, O Ganapati, help us in awakening our Kundalini Shakti),

Lord Ganesha is the only God that has no human head, and so does South Node of the Moon – Lord Ketu is the only entity in the whole gamut of astrology that has no human head.
This is interesting, as both gives the ability of focusing and deep meditative contemplation. And cessation of thoughts is prerequisite for spiritual accomplishment and turning to oneself. That results in wisdom which Ganesha have plenty of. Hence the power of discriminating intelligence and wisdom is granted by Lord Ganesha, hence he represents the Ascendant, his vehicle which he rides on is the large rat called muschika, and the his two wives Riddhi and Siddhi represent our relationships and our accomplishments.
Hence, he was the finest and the greatest scribe ever, to Ved Vyas, who is the author of Mahabharata. Vigneshwara or Vignaharta, the Lord and destroyer of obstacles. People mostly worship him asking for siddhi (success) in undertakings, and buddhi (intelligence). He is prayed to before any venture is started. He is also the God of education, knowledge and wisdom, literature, and the fine arts.
The son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha has an elephantine face with a curved trunk and big ears, and a huge pot-bellied body of a human being. He is the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles.

So, he wore a snake like a necklace in order to avoid attention to his stomach. Yet when he was departing towards home, in darkness, Chandra the Moon God ridiculed him over his weight. This angered him and he cursed the Moon that he would disappear very quickly. One the curse had been uttered, he could not take it back but altered saying the light of the Moon will diminish and finally, for one day will not exist. This is the New Moon or as I like to call it, the No Moon day! Which is Amavasya. Hence the birth of the phases of the Moon, with the waxing and waning cycles.
