SONVAA Yogas of Jyotisha Course

Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali are 196 Indian sūtras (aphorisms) that constitute the foundational text of Ashtanga Yoga, also called Raja Yoga

The Word Yoga or Yog has many meanings but one that stands out for all of us is from the PatañjaliYoga Sutras. SO to understand the Yoga of Jyotisha we need to really understand the other wider meaning of what Rishi Patañjali meant by it. COnsidering he has devoted entire sutras and has now become a household word Worldwide!

अथ योगानुशासनम् ॥१॥

atha yoga-anuśāsanam ||1||

This is the beginning of instruction in yoga.

Basically, yoga means “union.” It is the Sanskrit ancestor of the English word “yoke.” Almost to bind or come together in some sort of way to performa function or a purpose.  Hence, it comes to mean a method of spiritual union.

A yoga is a method—any one of many—by which an individual may become united with the Godhead, the Reality which underlies this apparent, ephemeral universe. To achieve such union is to reach the state of perfect yoga. Christianity has a corresponding term, “the mystical union,” which expresses a similar idea.

Bhoja, one of the classical commentators on these aphorisms, defines Patanjali’s use of the word yoga as “an effort to separate the Atman (the Reality) from the non-Atman (the apparent).”

One who practises yoga is called a yogi. That’s the PatañjaliSutras, where does that leave us in Vedic Astrological terms.

Infact, exactly the same essence applies in Jyotisha as well. There can be no ‘Yoga’ without the planets. We need at least two to make a yoga. A single planet is just that – Single. We need coming together by various ways, to form some kind of union / influence to make a Yoga. Does that mean it applies to only conjoining grahas planets? No.

Aspect of grahas is highly critical in any Yoga. Of course what kind of aspects? There are parasari aspect as well as Jaimini. What are we looking for. So there are Jaimini Yogas too!

That’s a beast where do we begin? Shubha grahas , malefic grahas dhristi forming yogas …. We are lost. How is my life going to be without the Yogas? Do Planets then in a graha mallika with a planet in every single house i.e. 9 planets in 9 different bhavas and rashis have no Yoga? Again, that is not true…

Where do we begin?

So this course will tackle, literally over 80 Yogas and we will be looking timing techniques of fructifications of the Yogas after studying some key Dashas. Vimshottari and variations of Vimshottari, Narayana Dasha,  Sudharshan Chakra Dasha and another dasha (to be announced whether Nakshatra or Yogini or Kala chakra)

2025-2026 First Module

Basis

As per four spiritual paths of karma-yoga, bhakti-yoga, rāja-yoga, and jñāna-yoga by Swami Vivekananda is his monumental philosophy which is very much intertwined with Jyotia. It is indeed closely linked to the Puruṣārtha, which is fundamental to Jyotia.  As per Swami Vivekananda, Karma-Yoga is purifying the mind by means of work. The concept of Karma belongs only to the body or the mind, never to the Atman (Self); only it can cast a veil before the Atman. The veil cast by bad Karma is ignorance. Good Karma has the power to strengthen the moral powers. Managing and focusing on Karma, it creates non-attachment; it destroys the tendency towards bad Karma and thereby purifies the mind. But if the work is done with the intention of enjoyment, it then produces only that very enjoyment and does not purify the mind or Chitta. Therefore, all work should be done without any desire to enjoy the fruits thereof. We learn how the desires in the soul shall manifest. Pain and suffering is not due to the desire itself, but due to attachment to the desire. This is very tough, similarly is Bhakti Yoga. Râja-Yoga. It fits into a mind which is curious and self inquiry of all classes with or without any belief, and it is the real instrument of religious inquiry. As each science has its particular method of investigation, so is this Raja-Yoga the method of religion. The chief parts are the Prânâyâma, concentration, and meditation. So as laid out by Swami Vivekananda, all Yogas can be classed within there categories.

Through the four spiritual paths of yoga viz. karma, bhakti, raja, and jñāna are those of the chara ātmakāraka and other charakāraka. Not all paths are possible nor are all paths possible to walk on, by everyone. Some of these paths may transform over time, depending on what time of your life you are at. If you are in vana prastha, then the pursuit of Moksha or the Bhakti and Jnana Yoga is indeed your ticket to getting there.  We examine the formation of these yogas, their roadblocks, obstacles, the soul preferences and the souls journey through this existence.

 Starting with Puruṣārtha as Jyotia underpinning, we scrutinize the spiritual paths of karma-yoga, bhakti-yoga, rāja-yoga, and jñāna-yoga examined through Jyotia., and learn to pinpoint the desires of the Atma (Soul) shall manifest
