Samudra Manthan or the Churning of the Ocean Floor for divine nectar is central to the cosmology of the Vedas and the Puranas. In Hinduism, Samudra Manthan or The Churning of the Ocean of Milk is one of the most famous episodes in the Puranas (500-300 BC). Ancient temples in Asia (Angkor Vat Khmer architecture temple complex at Angkor, Cambodia) are full of the bas reliefs depicting this episode.
It is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation. It’s a Hindu temple, one of first, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and depicts the entire episode of the Churning o the Ocean floor for extracting the Nectar of Immortality in its bas reliefs.
The episode of the Churning of the ocean floor is mentioned in quite a few of the Mahapuranas, including the Kūrma, Brhmavarta, Vishnu, to name a few. Asuras or demigods, a group of malicious deities in the Hindu pantheon, were gaining power over the angelic Devatas. Despite the Devas fighting bravely and being successful, they felt threatened and went to Lord Vishnu for help.
Lord Vishnu, the upholder of the universe advised the Devas that if they were to collaborate diplomatically with the Asuras and churn the floor of the ocean to extract Amrita, the nectar of immortality. The nectar would bring them immeasurable powers of knowledge, untold abundance, wealth, fortunes and eventually immortality.
There was a great war between the gods Devas and the Asuras (Demigods) for the control of the universe and at the centre of it was the ocean which was being churned to find the hidden treasures and the Amrita – the nectar of immortality.
When they began their collaboration with the Asuras and the Serpent King Vasuki, the Devas withheld this divine secret. Churning of the Ocean of Milk was an inconceivably elaborate process.
Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod and Vasuki served as the churning rope with the Devas on one end of the serpent King Vasuki and the Asuras at the tail. The process began vigorously and, as a result, the ocean floor began to sink down. Lord Vishnu as Kūrma, the celestial tortoise is the central key figure, who sat at the bottom of the Mount Mandara to stabilise the entire operation. Fourteen different valuable power giving treasures came out of the ocean floor while churning, and these were mostly kept by Devas, although the Asuras hatched a plan and did try to cheat them out of some treasures.
Eventually, Svarbhanu, one of the Asuras did quaff some of the nectar of Immortality. Mohini the beautiful nymph was a disguise used by Lord Vishnu to keep the Asuras demigods occupied, as the forthcoming Devas could whisk away the Nectar.
Svarbhanu got a whiff of the foul play and managed to consume some of the Nectar.
By then The Sun and Moon Gods gave heads up to Mohini, beautiful damsel, disguised as none other than Lord Vishnu himself.
Vishnu swiftly with his discus cut the giant Svarbhanu. Alas, he had scoffed the nectar enough to make him immortal and cut in two, the head part of the serpent king became known as Rahu and the tail end as Ketu.
As their deception had been detected, the two new entities (Rahu and Ketu) vowed that they would always eclipse the Sun and the Moon. And as Rahu had done deep penance over time to Lord Brahma, he was forced to grant them some wishes. One of which was capturing the Luminaries. Brahma knew that mayhem would ensue, and mankind would get wiped out, so he allowed only for a short while to eclipse the Luminaries! They remained in the skies as Rahu (the head) & Ketu (the lower half), a permanent reminder to the other planets(gods) of the darker side of life which we must defeat in the pursuit of immortality.
Just like the Churning of the Oceans, Rahu and Ketu makes us churn with their Transits and Natal Placements. And just as Lord Vishnu had to come down as the Kurma avatar – The Celestial turtle to stabilize the great operation, same way, we must aim to be equanimous and stable despite the churning of exterior Karmic forces. That is what purpose of Saturn, to show us our darker sides, so we can resolve and absolve the deeper darker clutches of the Karma and gain the equilibrium.
In Vedanta it is called Equanimity, Sanskrit – Samatvam is a vital concept and an aim of every yogi.
Every action we undertake needs to be an offering to the Lord – or Source – Īśvarārpaṇam.
The fruits of all actions we can treat as a gift – prasāda is sacred, not to indulge in criticism, even though it may not be as per our hopes and expectations. If received with a sense of fulfilment, then leads to equanimity or Samatvam. With Samatvam takes you to very, quick, and fast spiritual growth. Giving a deep inner stability irrespective of the external environment and its vagaries.
This gives us a clue to nature of Saturn. Saturn is that part in our chart, our life that delivers where we have defaulted and faulted and provides us plenty of opportunities for redressing, reparation work, reviewing the wrongs done in previous lifetimes, restitution, in short atonement. Unless we take the bull by its horns and address it, the stability, strength, constancy, the solidity of the rock that the celestial turtle Kūrma devata represents, will delude us in our lives. And our life will feel like a ‘football’ in the battlefield of being kicked by every passer-by…

Saturn has been in Capricorn, the Dhanishta Nakshatra since Feb 2022 and moving in for the first time in the sign Aquarius Kumbha on 28th April 2022, albeit the same Nakshatra. Saturn goes into Aqaurius on 17th Jan 2023 at 9:12 am. Chart of ingress as below. Falls on a Tuesday, where Moon is afflicted, and aspected by Mars Saturn and Rahu. Tithi is also ruled by Moon, Dashami giving strong focus of Moon as Gnyati Karaka. It represents people also, the head of the country, and so much affliction of the Moon – symbolises unhappy people and ruling party along with the Leader. Other Head is AK which is Venus which is completely combust and in a MKS Sun (Dying position in the 12th, and karaka saturn is also in Dying position, and albeit being lagna lord in lagna is strong, but the results given by Rahu. And Rahu creating a Kuja Sthambhana in the 4th house, giving riots,protests and all kinds of upheaval for people. Plus Jupiter of course could have saved the situation but it is in a pap karatari between Saturn and Rahu. Dhanishta Nakshatra Dhanishtha (Devanagari: धनिष्ठा) encompassing the Stars of α, β, γ and δ Delphini.
It constitutes a group of 4 stars and connecting the stars the shape of a drum or mridang emerges. And hence the Mridang, or the drum is one of its symbols. Both the instruments are hollow from within, here hollow means not having ego. There was a poet Arion of Lesbos (7th century BC), who was a court musician at the palace of Periander, ruler of Corinth. Arion is often called the inventor of the dithyrambic poetry, a particular style of literary composition for chorus dithyramb His fame was established in antiquity, and Herodotus says, “Arion was second to none of the lyre-players in his time and was also the first man we know of to compose and name the dithyramb and teach it in Corinth”. Hence Arion had amassed a fortune during his travels to Sicily and Italy. On his return trip from Tarentum, whose avaricious sailors plotted to kill Arion and steal the rich prizes he carried home. Arion was given the choice of suicide with a proper burial on land or being thrown in the sea to perish.
Threatened with death, Arion asked to be granted a last wish which the crew granted: he wanted to sing a dirge.
Playing his kithara, Arion sang a praise to Apollo, the god of poetry and of course the Sun, and his song attracted several dolphins around the ship.
Some argue that the dolphins were sent by Apollo to rescue Arion. At the end of the song, Arion threw himself into the sea rather than be killed, but one of the dolphins saved his life and carried him to safety at the sanctuary of Poseidon at Cape Tainaron.
When he reached land, being eager for his journey, he failed to return the dolphin to the sea, and it perished there. He told his misfortunes to Periander, the Tyrant of Corinth, who ordered the dolphin to be buried, and monument raised in the memory of the Dolphin.
Shortly after, word came to Periander that the ship on which Arion had sailed had been brought to Corinth by a storm. He ordered the crew to be led before him, and inquired about Arion, but they replied that he had died and that they had buried him. The tyrant replied: “Tomorrow you will swear to that at the Dolphin’s monument.” Because of this he ordered them to be kept under guard, and instructed Arion to hide in the dolphin’s monument.
The next morning, attired as he had been when he had thrown himself into the sea. When the tyrant brought the ship’s crew to the dolphin’s monument and ordered them to swear by the departed spirit of the dolphin that Arion was dead, Arion came out of the monument.
In amazement, wondering by what divinity he had been saved, the ship’s crew was silent. The tyrant ordered them to be crucified at the dolphin’s monument.
Apollo, because of Arion’s skill with the kithara, placed him and the dolphin among the stars! This dolphin was catasterized as the constellation Delphinus, by the blessings of the Sun God, Apollo.
Thus, this Greek Myth has a lot of connection with the Dhanista – as music and drums are all part of the Wealth given by the Aṣṭavasus, who are the Vedic deity of Dhanista Constellation.
VEDIC DEITY OF DHANISTA – Aṣṭavasus – The 8 Vasus
Aṣṭavasus or the eight Vasus signify 8 different kinds of Wealth in our lives.
They were born to Dharma deva of his wife Vasu, one of the daughter of King Dakṣa, one of the Prajapati – helping in the creation process for Lord Brahma.
Different purāṇas give different names to these Aṣṭavasus. According to Viṣṇu Purāṇa they are: Āpa, Dhruva, Soma, Dharma, Anila, Anala, Pratyūṣa and Prabhāsa.
Curse of Maharishi Great sage Vasiṣṭha.
Once the Aṣṭavasus were enjoying a family picnic with their wives and they happened to visit the āśrama abode of the Great Rishi Vasiṣṭha. One of the wives got enamoured over Nandinī, Vasiṣṭha’s beautiful cow and wanted it. In order to please his wife took the cow by force and left the place. When the Sage found his cow missing after some time, he understood by his divine powers who stole the cow and so he cursed the Aṣṭavasus saying that all of them would be born on earth as men. The Aṣṭavasus were greatly worried and approached the sage apologising and craving for pardon. The sage relaxed the curse and declared that their life on earth would be only for a very short time maintaining that the particular Vasu who committed the theft would live for a long time as man. The Vedic View is that Life on Earth Bhu loka is one of utmost suffering and we are here to pay off our Karmic debts. So, indeed truly enlightened souls are averse to being born on Earthly existence! It was this Vasu, Āpa (Dyau) who was born as Bhīṣma.
Bhīṣma, is the one of the most endearing and Grand Shire of the Epic the Mahābhārata (Sanskrit: महाभारतम्, Mahābhāratam, is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Rāmāyaṇa. It narrates the struggle between two groups of cousins in the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kauravas (100 in number) and the Pāṇḍava princes (five totally) and their successors.
It also contains philosophical and devotional material, such as a discussion of the four “goals of Human Life” or puruṣārtha. Among the principal works and stories in the Mahābhārata are the Bhagavad Gita, The Song of the Lord Krishna.
Traditionally, the authorship of the Mahābhārata is attributed to the Grand Sage Maharish Ved Vyāsa.
In the great battle at Kurukshetra, Bhīṣma was the supreme commander of the Kaurava forces for ten days. He fought reluctantly on the side of the Kauravas. Bhīṣma was one of the most powerful warriors of his time and in history. He acquired his prowess and invincibility from being the son of the sacred Ganges and by being a student of Lord Parashurama (Axe wielding Lord Rama but associated with Shukra Venus). Despite being about five generations old, Bhīṣma was too powerful to be defeated by any warrior alive at that time. Every day, he slew at tens and thousands of warriors. At the beginning of the war, Bhīṣma vowed not to kill any of the Pandavas, as he loved them, being their granduncle. Duryodhana often confronted Bhīṣma alleging that he was not actually fighting for the Kaurava camp as he wouldn’t kill any of the Pandavas. He also did not allow any of the Kauravas to be killed in the war, as he loved all his grand-nephews and wanted a peaceful end to the Kurushetra war of Mahabharata.
18 parvas or books constitute one of the longest epic poems ever known or written. In its longest version consists of over 100,000 śloka or over 200,000 individual verse lines (each shloka is a couplet), and long prose passages. At about 1.8 million words in total, the Mahābhārata is roughly ten times the length of the Iliad and the Odyssey combined, or about four times the length of the Rāmāyaṇa. in the Bhīṣma Parva (The Book of Bhīṣma) is about Bhīṣma as commander for the Kaurava and his fall on the bed of arrows. The most important aspect of Bhīṣma Parva is the Bhagavad Gita narrated by Krishna to Arjuna.The Bhagavat Gita (The Celestial Song) has become a household name is one of the core texts now in this Kali Yuga (Dark evil times) for philosophical and spiritual guidance.
Thus, Bhīṣma is associated with the Vasus and shows us the path, way to our real wealth.

Even if you are the most sinful of all sinners, yet you shall verily cross all sins by the raft of Knowledge. And would our inherent abilities, intelligence, and inner spiritual guidance to direct us to be completely aligned to our path in resolving and burning our Karmas not be the greatest wealth we hope to achieve? In Dattātreyayogaśāstra, (Sanskrit: दत्तात्रेययोगशास्त्र) a Vaisnava text probably composed in the 13th century CE, is the earliest text which provides a systematized form of Yoga. It has associations with pranayama, that calls for the yogi to sit in lotus position (padmasana) and practice what it calls breath-retention (kumbhaka), now called anuloma or nadi shodhana, alternate nostril breathing.

The word Kumbha also refers to the ‘pot’ or drum. Could be used for storing water. That is a great remedy for afflictions to the water element in your chart! Arki, Manda are other names of Saturn as per Jataka Parijata, colour is blue-black, and season is Shishir Winter (from Jan 10th – March 10 approx.).
